We Are Seneca Lake: Josh Fox Speaks Out About Nat Gas Storage Under Seneca Lake

"[Josh] Fox  put together this short documentary, which premiered exclusively at the Daily Beast on Wednesday—a call to action from him and fracking activist Sandra Steingraber, an ecologist and author who has been at the forefront of the We Are Seneca Lake campaign."

Horizontal slickwater hydrofracking was banned in New York State in 2014.  However, the infrastructure needed to support the natural gas industry, i.e. pipelines, storage facilities, trains, compressor stations, etc., are equally as disturbing and dangerous.  We must not let up on the fight to protect the planet.

Terry Greenwood: We Won't Forget You

Last month, Terry Greenwood, a Pennsylvania farmer whose water had been contaminated by fracking waste, died of cancer. He was 66 and the cause of death was a rare form of brain cancer.
His death drew attention from around the globe in part because Mr. Greenwood was among the first farmers from his state to speak out against the gas industry during the early years of the state's shale gas rush.

Josh Fox on Gasland Part 2, the Fracking-Earthquake Link & the Natural Gas Industry’s Use of PSYOPs

AMY GOODMAN: What did you find in part two? And start by talking about the significance of this Science journal study in relating earthquakes with fracking.

JOSH FOX: Well, first, in terms of earthquakes, which we do cover in the new film because there’s a huge shale play in California, and in fact there’s a Legacy thousand-acre oil field in the center of Los Angeles, which is being drilled and fracked right on top of the Newport-Inglewood fault line—the earthquake study showed that earthquakes far away, you know, on the other side of the planet, could then trigger bigger earthquakes where they have injection well facilities. So, injection well facilities are used for fracking waste. Fracking, you know, creates an enormous amount of wastewater. When they frack the wells with two to nine million gallons per well of fluid and water, that fluid has to come back up and be disposed of somehow. The industry has a huge problem figuring out how to dispose of it, so they inject it back down into the ground. And what the report says is that fault lines are becoming critically stressed by the process of injection wells. It also says that the fracking itself can cause minor earthquakes.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Josh, your original film has provoked quite a bit of effort to discredit some portions of the film, especially the now-legendary portion of people’s faucets catching fire. Can you talk about the efforts of the industry to discredit your work?

JOSH FOX: Well, the oil and gas industry has been attacking the film, the families in the film, the scientists in the film, consistently for the last three years since it came out, and they’re at it again with this new film. It’s extraordinarily disheartening to see that this is their strategy. It’s deny, deny, deny, spread money around, try to influence politicians, spend lots and lots of money in the media to convince Americans that it’s a great idea to drill one to two million new gas wells. Those are the projections. The oil and gas industry has leased more land than the total landmass of California and Florida combined, which means that a lot of those adjacent properties in these 34 states where the drilling campaign is going on are also influenced, so it’s maybe twice that amount of area. It really is shocking that what they’re saying, similar to the way that they attack climate science, that some of these things are a hoax, that they’re not actually true. This is a really blatant attack on the science, on the way that this issue has been reported for the last three-and-a-half years. And they also revealed themselves to be doing some kind of dastardly things in the background without us knowing about it. (End of transcript excerpt)

My comment: One interesting (and disturbing) fact that was brought out in this film: Fresh water being transported to gas well sites is "fresh" because it is new to the site, but it can be anything but fresh. This "fresh" water is brine or treated frac fluid or other such combinations. So the trucks say FRESH WATER on the outside, but are not what the average person would think of as fresh.

A shout-out to Texas Sharon, Sharon Wilson, who is mentioned in the Gasland film in regard to her knowledge of PSYOPS activity in the gas industry! Kudos to this amazing woman who has been a warrior in this fight for more than a decade in Texas. Her story would make an Emmy-award-winning film.

The New York State Legislature is almost certainly going to end their session this week without protecting New Yorkers from fracking, particularly residents of the Southern Tier. Now it’s up to the Governor.

The New York Times article states that gas permits may begin being issued later this summer primarily in Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Chemung and Steuben Counties. In press interviews over the last couple of days the Governor has tried to backpedal, claiming that no decisions have been made, but he has not committed to protecting New Yorkers from fracking. He has not even publically admitted that the SGEIS is still lacking the necessary health and environmental studies.

In just two days New Yorkers Against Fracking generated thousands of calls, faxes, Facebook posts and tweets to Governor Cuomo to ban fracking. Hundreds of us attended rallies across the state, including one just outside of the Governor’s office in the Capital.

But this has not been enough. We need to work harder to make our voices heard!

Although this is a personal victory and I am very grateful and relieved at the US Attorney's decision, it serves as a painful reminder that we do not have rights unless we exercise them.........

Shame, shame on Andy Harris, Republican representative from Maryland. He had Josh Fox arrested rather than allowing him to film the hearing on hydrofracking and the EPA study on water contamination in Pavilion, Wyoming. Transparency? A thing of the past to Rep. Harris.

In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.), the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, can be heard at the end of the clip asking Republican Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) to halt the arrest and permit the man to film the public hearing.

Josh Fox on Democracy Now: Gasland Film

The environmental contamination and human health risk associated with the extraction of natural gas using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” was little known across the United States for years, until a documentary film brought the issue to the national stage. Josh Fox directed the film Gasland, which chronicles the devastation affecting communities where fracking is taking place and the influence of the natural gas industry over regulation of the techniques and chemicals used in the process. The industry aggressively attacked the film, especially when it was nominated for an Academy Award this year.

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! At a recent showing of Josh Fox's award-winning documentary, "Gasland,"  people had two questions on their minds:  Is the risk [from gas drilling] worth the reward?  What's the alternative?  This New York Times article by Peter Applebome portrays a fair and balanced view of the issues which are being debated. It is worth reading.  Laurie Spaeth of the Chenango Delaware Otsego Gas Drilling Opposition Group (http://www.un-naturalgas.org/) said, "As impressive as the technology is, there are going to be accidents.  What they're doing here is not quite as extreme as what they were doing in the gulf [of Mexico], but it clearly has the same potential for devastation."

Congress to Investigate Safety of Natural Gas Drilling Practice Known as Hydraulic Fracturing

The top Democrats on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce have asked eight oil-field companies to disclose the chemicals they’ve used and the wells they’ve drilled in over the past four years. Last week, Waxman also revealed two of the largest gas drilling companies have pumped hundreds of thousands of gallons of diesel-based fluids into the ground in violation of a voluntary agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency.
